Diving or Snorkeling with Whale Sharks
Placencia, Belize is one of only a handful of global destinations that is consistently visited by the gentle whale shark. Whale (size) sharks (breath through gills) are not only the largest fish in the world (up to 40 feet or 13 meters) but also an extremely gentle creature. Whale sharks only feed on microscopic organisms and actually do not possess any teeth. They filter their food through massive gills.
Since whale sharks do not possess any natural enemies they approach the divers and snorkelers with a very slow and curious demeanor. You can frequently get within just a few feet of them especially when they approach the surface of the ocean. Whale sharks congregate right at the barrier reef about 45 minutes from Placencia and The Villas at Cocoplum during the full moon (one week before and one week after) each April, May & June. Their visit is so consistent that many dive shops will guarantee you will see them else your next trip is free!
The following photos were taken by Boris Mannsfeld (The Villas at Cocoplum) and his wife Renee while snorkeling in May of 2007. Purchase a second home at The Villas at Cocoplum and experience something truly amazing!
